I would like to build a flywheel drive engine in the future. The Revmaster crank is very heavy.

There has been at least one Sonerai 2 flown with a Flywheel drive engine. It certainly is a lower cost conversion, even if the motor mount is a bit more difficult to build….

Mine has a single mag as well. I hate the weight BUT they are pretty bulletproof once rebuilt. If going with a single ignition, which I am, the aero mag is the way to go IMO Is that the mag mount you made? Mine was a super crude set of plates bolted to the case having four long spacers. The mag was in between. Apparently it had worked but very fiddly looking. Dave I just contacted the folks who make the E-mag. Its an electronic ignition that operates like a magneto...fully self-contained. Starts off of ship's power then shifts to internal power above 800 RPM. If the internal generator ever fails, it goes back to ship's power. It would dovetail nicely with a total loss system. The electronic ignition is programmable. According to Brad, they are working on a dual ignition version as a direct replacement for the Bendix D3000. The single ignition system weighs just over 3 pounds. The dual system should come in below 6. I don't know what the dual ignition will cost. The single is currently listed at $1,395. www.emagair.comOBTW...I can't find anything called the "aero mag." Here's a weight comparison.... The tail got lighter...but the beaded cord and the front pulley will end up creating a net weight gain....but I think a trim system is worth a few grams. Chucker Attachments:

It lives!
Started right up and ran like a beast! Okay...maybe that was a proud papa talking....but it runs and will easily make 3000 Static RPM on a 54-46 prop. I wired in magneto adapters for electricity and everything works as advertised.
I need to:
1. Build the canopy 2. Drill the wing spars and carry throughs 3. Balance and mount the ailerons 4. Install wingtips 5. Cover/Paint 6. Fly/Race 7. Experiment/Improve/Tweak
Unfortunately, when I was doing my initial engine runs, I sucked up a rock and removed part of the tip on one propeller blade. The good news is that I now have an excuse to have Ed Sterba cut the broken prop down to a racing diameter. Looking at the numbers, I might get 183-210 MPH at 4200 RPM on a 48-46 propeller. Is that too small a diameter?

Congrats! I think that 48" was pretty common in the day. I was gonna stay with 48" just for ground clearance. Front drive, backwards turning VWs have the advantage of finding used props out there. Trans drive standard rotation are pretty unusual. Dave
