Awesome! Thanks. I sure hope the GPAC hub works. I'll have to make it work - have you priced 4140? Dave

I have not priced 4140, but my step dad owns a machine shop which means I can get it at cost. Tell me if the GPAC hub doesnt work. I could make two instead of just one.

Hmmm. The only issue I see right off is that the GPAC hub is designed to fit the VW crank end which is a really stubby taper. The Wittman plan has a longer taper. Both are likely 3 degree tapers but the extension in the plans, and that I have, are a few inches long whereas the crank nose is only about 1 1/2" long. Of course we wouldn't use the hub on that end of the crank on the V Witt but if the hub is for that crankshaft end then.... I'll have ask around and noodle on that one for a while. Dave

So after almost a year off no progress, I am finally back at it. It will be slow, but hopefully progressing. The frame looks good. I need to check if the canopy is the correct one. It looks to be a replacement that needs some modifications. It also needs some cowling and the pro extension finished. Biggest thing is. How do I know if my wings are Airworthy? They seem solid. There are a few small gaps between the plywood and the trailing spar.

My fear would be that if there are small visible areas of dry unattached skin, where else could it be as well? I suppose you could route off the skins, starting with the worse side first and inspect inside. I did that and my spars were crushed considerably under the tie wire attach points. Just too much damage to repair and then be worried about. It was less trouble building new wings. I'd start by sandblasting the fuse and epoxy prime that. The glues of all the major covering systems require epoxy primer. Dave

David, Do you have plans for the canopy? My plans do not. I also seem to missing details on how my tail rod spring attaches to the fuselodge. I have the design of the socket, but not how and where the tail spring attaches to the fuselodge. I also noticed that the previous builder mounted the engine differently. There are a couple of brackets on the engine that attach directly to the firewall cross members.

Well, the plans from Aircraft Spruce have motor mount dimensions but it wasn't uncommon in those days for builders to be on their own with respect to firewall forward canopy and sheet metal. Nothing on my plans but your firewall/panel/boot cowl will dictate how it will need to fit. The canopy is a late step IMO as even the thickness of covering/paint could cause a remake. I had a poorly made canopy sans glass that I will redo. It is simply a sheet metal frame, hinged on one side, with a wrapped plexi windscreen - similar to a Cassutt just not the modern F-1 style. My tailwheel spring is inserted into a 5/8" ID (IIRC) tube and through-bolted with an AN-5 from bottom to top. There is a castellated nut welded onto the tube. The cotter pin is a tricky one once the fuse is covered. Not sure about posting pics as I closed my Photobucket acct this am. Can't afford their ransom! I have lots of pics of Wittman's plane, a few of Vliet's, etc. Happy to share but no two were alike and homebuilding was much more individual back then. Studying pics of period racers will get you almost as far. Dave
