Since I skipped the UV Poly Spray in lieu of UV-containing color finishes(there are three Poly Tone colors that have this), I don't have many layers to fudge with. It was right to color. After spraying Poly Brush I went around ironing every seam. First color coat I see all my mistakes. Some of the tapes were older material and looked "overworked" right off the roll. Oh well, I keep telling myself it's a race plane. After that first color coat I went around with parchment paper and iron to smooth all tape edges. After the second coat I still have areas where the edges are flush but appear unattached and are "dry" and not taking color right at the seam. I know that's a Poly Brush/unfilled weave issue but now I'm into color. I called their tech but he has yet to return the call. I might use reducer and smear those areas in as suggested with pinholes as unfilled weave is what I have in areas. Soundness of the tapes is what I'm concerned about. These are fast little planes. In the future I'll do the dunking the tapes in Poly Brush trick right before application as with brushing it's just too easy to skimp when trying to keep things tidy. Just venting, Dave

I have always sprayed the poly brush liberally , over tapes, before going to silver. I know you are not going with silver, but silver does fill and hide small imperfections. I also use small amounts of silver 'paste' (the sludge at the bottom of the can) to smear on the small imperfection areas, much like you would do with glaze putty on a car body..... I doubt if a Poly Fiber rep will be able to help you with the deviation from what they prescribe. They have told me before that I was wrong in 'spraying' poly brush...they said "we don't call it poly BRUSH for nothing" ..... I have always disagreed. I use high pressure to help the pink encapsulate the fabric. My fabric work lasts as long as anybody's, and has won awards, so I guess if it 'aint broke, don't fix it'....

Interesting as their own book says to spray Poly Brush at the same dilution - of course that's after the first brushed coat. I was trying to decide what mix to flow into the edges where the tapes are dry. The book says to use Poly Brush even during the silver stages. They even say you can glue a patch over Poly Tone but that it just isn't as nice as when taken down to fabric. This makes me wonder if I can just flow some Poly brush onto the edges then spray Poly Tone over that. I could just load a pinstriping brush and flow my color in there to fill it in. I would rather be adding some adhesive in there though. My friend taught me that dipping technique when using nitrate. It's really REALLY drippy but if you can keep it from dripping through and landing elsewhere inside there's no issue. If you do allow a drip to dry inside it will forever change the outside sheen of that spot due to excess weave fill(Actually, that same warning exists for the Poly Fiber system). A little MEK dilutes out any "exterior" runs enough that there is no extra weave fill there. Pre-coating for tapes with nitrate just as you would with Poly Brush keeps it from dripping through where tapes are applied. I wish I would have appllied these tapes that wet but it was a new process to me. I can guarantee the wings will be better! Dave

I don't even do the first brushed coat...I use a wagner powermatic for the first coat....Pushes the poly brush into the pores nicely.....

Well, spent much of the day with my Mack Sword pin striping brushes applying Poly Brush to the dry edges then wiping with a finger before it dried. This filled it in pretty well. Other tape areas I hit with some 400 grit. I do like that there appear to be no incompatible steps with Stits like with dope. I think all steps are compatible with each other. Blew the sanding dust out of all the pinks and shot a few test areas. Actually did what I had hoped. I plan on returning early in the am as it's still almost 90 here. Let's hope it looks okay to spray then! Really want to get this thing back on its gear! Dave
