Hello Everyone,
Sorry about sending out a mass e-mailing, but I have been swamped with work and wanted to keep you all updated on this years AirVenture Cup Race.
Plans for the race are coming together and the FSDO has approved the Race Course. For those of you that I haven't talked to recently, the course will be completely new this year, we are starting at Dayton Wright Brothers, KMGY and will have three turn points before heading to the finish line. From Dayton we will go to Morris, IL C09 (Zero-Nine) from there the 2nd turn point is DeKalb, IL, KDKB, the third turn point will be McDermott Airpark in Sullivan, WI (31WI). The Finish line has been moved to the West Bend, WI Airport - KETB. Following the finish line we will be recovering at Fond du Lac for the briefing and staging for the mass arrival into OSH.
The Race staff is planning to head to Dayton on Friday afternoon, July 22. You are welcome to arrive early if you want to take a day and explore the USAF Museum, Commander Aero, our hosts in Dayton can get you a car or ride over to the Museum. If you want to see the Museum plan to do it on Friday, as we will be busy at the airport on Saturday.
The FBO Commander Aero is hosting a picnic lunch for all the participants on Saturday and the Wright B Museum next door to Commander Aero will be open and they have offered a discount for an orientation ride in their 1911 Wright B Flyer Replica. I had the chance to fly it two years ago and it was a lot of fun.
Saturday night will be a reception, briefing, and dinner. That will be held at Commander Aero as well.
Sunday morning the local EAA Chapter in conjunction with Commander Aero will be holding a pancake breakfast, so even if you don't win the race, at least you'll be well fed!
The race is scheduled to start Sunday morning at 10:00am, (9am in Oshkosh)
For those of you that are new and a reminder for those of you that are returning, even though the Saturday night briefing is "mandatory" if you are delayed because of weather keep us posted, if you miss the briefing, don't worry we will brief you individually, the important thing is to be safe getting to Dayton.
When you arrive in Dayton, plan to fuel your aircraft ASAP (unless you plan on giving rides on Saturday, then you can fuel after you are done with local flights) Commander Aero has trucks and will come down the flightline and fuel everyone, but we want to get everyone fueled by Saturday night as it would be a raging goat rope to try and fuel all of the race planes Sunday morning. (I speak from experience on that)
As some of you have noticed there was a snafu at the Holiday Inn, and they double booked the hotel. We have a new block of rooms at the Hampton Inn, Springboro, OH which is right down the road from the airport. If you have not yet booked your hotel rooms, please do so ASAP, if you are booked at one of the other hotels in the area and want to switch you are welcome to do that, the Hampton Inn, though a deal with Commander Aero gave us a price break of $89/night. When you call be sure you mention you are with "The Air Race at Commander Aero"
The phone number for the Hampton Inn is (937)743-2121
Sarah has been working like mad at getting the race program done, so if you have not yet sent me pictures of your aircraft please do so ASAP. If you have not gotten a race number assigned yet, please contact me ASAP.
Several of you have asked about Convention Admission, your entry includes one admission (weekly) for Oshkosh. EAA makes us buy them for you, although they do give us a small discount. If you would like to order a second (or third) weekly pass for your co-pilot, chase plane pilot, spouse etc. Let me know by this Friday. We can order them for you at the discounted price (basically they charge us for three days and we get a week pass) Because they are non-refundable, I don't order any "spares" so if you want to order additional wristbands do so early. I will collect the money when we get to Dayton to save you from having to mail another check.
I am looking forward to the race this year, with the new course and a great group of racers it promises to be a fun year. If you have any questions please contact me. I am flying all week, so e-mail is probably the best way to reach me, ewhyte@wi.rr.com, or you can try my cell (414) 241-4469
See you in Dayton!
