To continue on a conversation I was having with Ed, I am going to post here in hopes others will join in! ;-) The Cougar went to a gentleman named Malcolm Morrison in PA. He does a lot of work with latex paint on aircraft. His website is www.wienerdogaero.com/I am going to see about using latex paint to put the yellow starburst back on the top of the wings on my plane, as well as the race numbers. Need to look into prepping the other paint that is on there to accept the latex. The previous owner removed the yellow from the tops of the wings because he said the paint was sort of peeling/chipping off. The blue is in great shape though. How are you planning on getting to Oshkosh Ed? I'm really starting to look into going, as mentioned before, it will be my first time there. I would love to have me and my plane ready to fly it there, but that is all a matter of "time will tell." Also, what is the issue with finding a place to stay there? Do you have to reserve a room or house a year in advance or anything, or is it fairly easy to find a place to stay? I doubt I will be there the entire time, maybe only 3 days. Anyone, have an extra seat in a plane they might want to ride share out there would be great too! ?

Yes, Malcolm Morrison built up one of my Micro Mongs with the latex finish…I don't know how latex would go over aluminum. I usually drive up to Osh and bring my tent. I stay in camp Scholler. This year I will probably do the same, but will swing southeast and head to the family airstrip in Ohio and work on the hangar for a few weeks, before heading back to S.C. The best way to view the Osh experience is to camp there. At 61, I am getting tired of camping it with my tent, but it is the most economical method for me….

Was that your black and green Micro Mong he did? I had looked at that on barnstormers a couple times. I think Malcolm mentioned latex will stick to aluminum, but I'm looking at just going over the blue that is already there. But that is probably why the other yellow paint didn't set well and was removed. I have to look in my paperwork and see what type of paint was used. I saw it once, but can't remember off the top of my head. It's great because I even got the paint codes and receipts for the paint and covering materials. So when it's time to recover the fuselage in a couple years, I won't have too much guess work! I got real lucky with this plane!!!
I have another friend front Australia that is staying at Camp Scholler as well, he rented a 21' camper for him and his dad. I'm thinking about seeing how much a pop-up camper would be, I need to have electricity for the sleep machine. ;-) He had also mentioned that colleges rent out dorm rooms, I'm going to look into that as well.

We used to stay at Fon du lac at the Nazarene college dorms. Not sure if they are full but we would reserve early. It was a 30 min daily drive so not as good as on the field. Now we stay camping by our plane in vintage. Last year by my Tripacer, this year it'll be by Linda's straight tail 172 right on the flight line. Camping is a blast and you "live" OSH rather than "see" OSH. Hard to explain but the difference is undeniable. Storms aside, we will forever camp - as long as we are able. We have many friends going up, two or three are judges, and plenty of camp sites to hang out in and share an adult libation if you are so inclined. I assume we will all exchange cell numbers before then. Dave

Yes, the Micro Mong was green and black. I do not know if you can put latex over acrylics, like enamel, and I don't know if you can put it over urethanes, or dopes, or Stits vynal Poly tone either. I think if you want to use latex, it has to be over the bare untreated fabric. I did extensive experimenting with latex finishes on my Skylite Ultralight back in the '90s...

Personally, I'm fairly paranoid about the long-term UV effects of any "non-silver" finish. Maybe just me but most processes say to not exclude the specified UV blocker recommended. This is whether or not there is supposedly UV blocker in the urethane, latex, whatever. Nevertheless, I saw yet another new plane on our field today with certified fabric that was light enough in the wing to read by while in a dim hangar. JMO but the included UV protection in so many alternative finishes found on home builts seam to forget they weren't designed for fabric. If I'm mistaken I would want to know how to establish UV degradation to the fabric. I believe the effects are cumulative so how do we know when tapes, glues, etc have had enough? Not trying to derail or start a debate. I have seen nice latex finishes so if compatibility and weight aren't a problem just ensure there is "silver" below. JMO, Dave

I was just thinking the same thing Ed. Checked on the S.net site and then here, was hoping everyone is either flying or building! Unfortunately I am working, but it is supposed to be our last Saturday, so I should get some more time to get on mine and also get down there to learn a few things and give you a hand. I took the summer off of school to concentrate on my airframe rating and to finish up my fixed wing addon, the later should be done in a month or so after talking to the Designated Examiner yeaterday!!! I look forward to meeting up with you at some point!

Hey, I'm building! Fitting the lower longeron "covers" today and have been figuring on stringer material. The screen window frame material Bengelis recommends will only work in a few places(bends are just too sharp so they twist). I used that PVC outside corner moulding for the longeron covers and am thinking a modification with a table saw and router could have it working as stringers. Finished fabbing the brakes, stick, bellcrank, and flap handle this last week. Racing to beat the humidity! Dave

We can make something work with that Ed!
I made a little progress on #37 yesterday, got the Aerocarb mounted. Its not exactly how I want it (it's mounted horizontal, against manufacturer recommend) but it should work for now. I will have to see how bad the mixture differential is between each side of cylinders. Would like to make a small tunnel at the bottom of the cowling so I can mount it more vertically, but that will be a little later. Will start a project post on it and get some pictures up soon!
