So I bought a 2180 engine that had been nosed over, for salvage price (Cheap!). Figured I'd at least have some spare parts. Tore the engine down and cleaned everything well. Indicated the crank in its mains and in the case half with the hub still on and got .0005" TIR. Woo Hoo, Right? I put the crank in the press and pressed the crank off the hub. Cleaned the crank again and put it back in its bearings, lubricated, and indicated the nose. Got .0025. Well not too bad, but not good enough. Polished off the discoloration on the taper (where the hub mated). Found a little line that would not polish, from the inside end of the keyway to under the brass distributor gear. Another small one from the top opposite side of the keyway, extending 1/2" out. Both lines are irregular and helical around the shaft. Had the crank x-rayed. Yep, cracks. Right where you'd expect them to be. It'll make a neat lamp. ;D New 84mm Chevy journal crank, Force 1 hub, all new bearings, and rods coming soon. Case is ok. Could be worse.
Seems like a round (cylindrical), or inverted dovetail key and keyway with no sharp inside geometry on the crank would be a better design: sacrifice the hub instead of the crank?

Thanks Ed, yes its much better to find it now. I had pretty much counted on a new crank and hub, so its not a serious disappointment. In fact, friends have helped me find sources for a crank and a few other parts that will significantly increase performance. So, the engine will be better than before, more power, and prettier. ;D
Quite the luxury to rebuild an engine on the breakfast bar, coffee on, big furry dog warming my feet. (Yep, single, lol). Breakfast bar was scheduled for a rebuild anyway.
Looking forward to getting the Sonerai IILS done so I can do justice to the Skylite.

My evil Sonerai friends talked me into an 86mm crank to replace the 82mm. No one could provide the numbers I needed to determine if it would clear the case and cam. Living life in the fast lane, I ordered the crank, and then sweat it out for 2 weeks til it arrived. Well, it does clear the case and cam very nicely. I went with Chevy rod journals, and the ARP H-Beam rods are on their way. I am 95% sure the rods will also clear, but we'll see. If it all works out, we'll be up to ~2287cc. Planning on a 7.9:1 CR. When the rods arrive (with all new internal engine bearings), this VW is going back together. Tom
