As I have pulled the Renegade (N73RL) out of cold storage to begin an overhaul to fly, I am looking at the engine and wondering about modern methods and parts. I have not done an overhaul of a VeeDub in about 30 years. Yes, that makes me, well,,,,very old now. In all of the moves I have lost what ever we used in the old days as a spec guide. What do you guys use now? On line sources, or old copies of "VW's for Dummies"?
Thanks, Lex "An ego is no match for gravity"

Lex.....Just this past week I bought a VW engine for my Supervee, and Now I am asking the same question that you just did......I, too, have not worked on a VW engine for almost 30 years, and I am in the same boat as you. We do have some real talent with engines in this Affordable Air Racing Group...However, two that come to mind, Jeff and Chad, are both really busy guys, so I am thinking that it would be cool if we could use this forum as a clearing house for information on how to set up the engine, the tolerances, etc.........Any Ideas out there, guys? ?? Ed F.

Ed,
If I promise not to race, will they share the REAL secrets? ;D I would like to build mine back as an 1835 for the best power and reliability. That is of course based on 30 year old technology. If anyone is interested, when I get to the engine I can share Vernon's inverted system details.

Very Funny......NO!!!........We want you to race!!! I don't think any hard core racers share engine secrets...But Supervee Air Sports will be a different kind of racing...Where RELIABILITY is much more important than all out grenade power...In Formula Vee, for the most part, you were right over the airport at all times.....Supervee is about cross country racing....Jeff's engine has power, AND reliability. He averaged in the high 170's/ low 180's for 500 miles......

As a start, Great Plains Aircraft Supply Co offers an assembly manual and 2 DVD set that I have found to be helpful. Also this site:http://www.cbperformance.com/techtalk.asp#one
These will include torque specs, how to set CR, correct sealants, required tools, and procedures, but not necessarily more in-depth specs.
I'm currently taking a 2180 to 2287cc with an 88mm crank and Arp rods, and one or two other goodies. The VW is far from the small block Chevy 1/4 mile engines I was used to, so its been a learning experience for me. But its a fun engine to work on - pretty straightforward.
There has been much discussion recently about improved baffling and cleaning out the casting flash in the heads for better cooling. Hope this helps a little. And, no, my Sonerai IILS is not a racer.

So, to follow up on this topic of engines, and to offer an idea, are there any good engine builders out there that have the time to build up some engines and make them available?.......There are many people who are very good at building airframes, 'and' engines, and that is great............. But, there are also people who are good at building engines, but not so much with an airframe, and vica-versa...... Is there any interest in a barter program....where a guy who, lets say, welds real good, and needs an engine built, who could barter the fuselage welding skills for engine building skills.....??.....Just an idea to possibly stir up some conversation.......Ed

Ed, I wish I had the experience so I could claim to be a very good engine builder, and you know what airframe I'd trade for. (Dang Bitts got into my head and won't go away). I'll bring this up to a couple very good engine builders I know.

Thanks for the post, Tom......I am currently on sheet 17 of the Bitts Drawings, so I am over half way.....It's optional engine is a VW. It would be like peanut butter and chocolate.....If we could connect engine builders and airframe builders, so they could help each other, and the result would be, more racers flying, sooner.....Ed

Lex, Why don't you compose an ad in our "Airframe and engine" parts area of this site?.....If we can find a new owner for the Purple Renegade, It would potentially put another Supervee air Racing team on the map.....Ed
