I have been a long time lurker to this forum. I was wondering would the ar-5 be a possible new airframe for the super vee competitions? I know he is not selling plans for it, but he seems willing to work with other people since the AR-6 Endevor was built for the formula 1 races at Reno. Any thoughts? www.ar-5.com/Neil

Hi Neil, Good Question....First I do not know the Specs of the AR-5. Supervee rules have the wing area set at 75 Sq. Ft. We have a 450 pound minimum weight empty, and other physical Strength and dimensional rules that the AR-5 may or may not fit into. However, the big issue is availability. I do not believe the designer ever intended there to be more than one flying example of this design, and I do not think construction drawings are, or ever will be, available. The prototype is retired to a museum, I believe. When Supervee gains popularity, and we are actually having competitions, perhaps he will get involved..... Certainly, a VW powered AR-5 would be a screamer......Ed F.

I have a question that would fit into this category and could tie up the answers above. I'll start there: AR-5 and AR-6 were never planned to be built in multiple examples nor have plans ever produced. Studying the now free Mike Arnold videos on youtube would definitely give many of us ideas on how to clean up a Sonerai or VW-Cassutt.
Now my further question:
Ed, With the goal of getting the V's back in the air for competition, are there official limitations on what airframes are "aproved"? Becuase of all the planes that run on VW power out there, a few may lend themselves favorably to the sport. Example, It would be easy to build a fixed gear KR-1 with a 75 sq. foot wing and have a nice other option out there. The Onex may be slower but allow competition, etc. Waiting for a Sonerai-1 to come up on barnstormers can be a big waiting game especially if you hit the marketing nail on the head and everyone is looking for one. Besides, in looking around I'm not sure if anyone is selling a newly welded up S-1 Fuselage these days.
I have yet to sign up to receive the newsletter and have a peek at the rules but what are the plans for airframe eligibility? I would think anything that flys with VW power and under 2300cc, and has class/safety friendly wing loading numbers would work to get the sport off the ground again.
Thoughts?

rob40, Welcome. The 'basic' qualifications for a Supervee, starts with the grandfathering in of a Sonerai 1, a V-Witt, and, with a different, 6G minimum wing, a Renegade.( I have already designed a beefier spar for this wing) As well, the Cassutt 111m with the 17 ft. wing is qualified. All must have VW based power, and all must Be at least 6 G plus or minus. Other requirements are fixed gear, at least two 500 by 5 tires, and other small details, concerning visibility requirements and crash survivability features.... Another 'division' of Supervee will be the Sonerai 2 in any version forms, but VW based power. And, when Supervee Air Sports expands from straight line speed dashes and short X-C's into closed course pylon racing, all Sonerais will then have to have the 'S' modded wing. If the Onex is a 6 'G' airframe, I see no reason why it should not be eligible.....I don't know if a fixed gear KR-1 would be eligible, strength wise. At present, the Supervee rules are suggestions, and are not set in stone until we are big enough to have a rules committee go over them and make them firm. I am hoping that we can get some volunteer help in this area, especially in the engine rules department....I can't do it alone, and welcome suggestions..... As a side note, I frequently come across Sonerai projects for sale....Last week former IF-1 and Formula Vee race pilot Carl Swenson passed away. In his racing stable are 1.5 Sonerais , a competitive Cassutt, and a race trailer. Eventually they are going to be available to purchase. The one airframe is the #17 FV sonar, damaged in a power failure takeoff, and with it comes a partially built replacement airframe. The IF-1 guys are already notified, and will probably be buying his Cassutt, but the Sonerai projects will be surplus to them. When I know more, I will make the info available.....ED

That picture you found is not Carl's Sonerai, but Carl's Cassutt, which I already have a buyer for......Go to formulav.com you can find a picture of Sonerai #17 on the FV website...

Silly as it sounds I have seen people get into these small aircraft in ways they could not do in reverse quickly. Sitting in like a bathtub I couldn't do and I'm only 5'9". Might have to roll in sideways to fit in one if much taller than me. Room for a chute? Not really. Maybe just for a test period. Might try the V Witt for size but it is multi-media and has some potentially expensive custom parts if not included in a project. Dave.
