Guys and Gals, I am a new member and just picked up a set of Renegade plans and Bulletins. I have Bulletins 1 to 4 but am missing number 5. So if you have #5 I'd love a copy.
Now to my post. There is a VW only company(family owned and run) in Wisconsin called MoFoCo. All of "Their" Heads a made in the US,cast in Wisconsin! They have a SCORE (off road racing group) approved head that cools and flows better than the stock VW head and is very affordable. So if you are looking for a great set of head here you go.

Dutch, Thanks for joining our group. Hopefully there will be some activity with the MoFoCo head topic…A lot of Motorheads read these posts…Hopefully We can talk you into building a Renegade with VW power so you can get involved with Supervee Aiir Sports…...Ed Fisher

H Dutch, Those are some good heads and they do offer dual plug machining. They didn't do my set though, I told the truth when asked if it was for an airplane and after that they stopped corresponding... Unfortunately good VW parts are getting harder to find, I recently received a new set of lifters that have pits of rust forming on the faces, not even out of the package yet. The well-known and respected supplier told me, "they will be safe to run and the rust would wear right off"! That's ridiculous, not in my engine. Anyways, not trying to discourage by any means, welcome to the group and get going on your build!!!

I have had many emails from the owner. They were very anxious to make heads for my Sonerai engine. You might try them again.

I received two extra sets of dual port heads with my S-II, but it currently has single port heads on it now. It has flown for close to 400 hours like that. What is the advantages/disadvantages of the dual ports and is it worth switching to them on a stock 1835 HAPI, single ignition, 29mm Aerocarb?

Im not the expert but from my research you would not likely gain much unless running very high rpm or increasing the displacement. Its probably easier to keep velocity up on single port heads as they are sure to have smaller valves and ports. Some guys complain of dead spots on dual port intakes where the fuel actually falls out if suspension or flows unevenly into the ports. Dave

I believe the HAPI engines all had single port heads. I have one right now, removed from a KR-2…I heard it run before I bought it, don't know if I will install it in Beetlebomb or not…

Ed is correct. Dual port heads breathe better with larger displacement and high RPM. Simgle port heads provide better torque...especially with smaller displacement engines. Unless you are turning over 4000 RPM, I doubt you would see any more power with the dual port heads....and possible flat spots where the mixture fails to remain atomized. I have a VW machine shop in Phoenix (VW Performance). The owner's name is Steve. He balanced my engine, sleeved the lifter bores, and is currently working on my heads. I chose not to increase the valve size because It already matches the port velocity I want. Steve is a wealth of information and he loves to educate VW builders such as ourselves. You will find his email address on his website. He responds just about every night. He gives honest answers and has no need to drum-up unnecessary work.

Chucker, Curious if you've had issues with the "cold shoulder" or have your contacts minded the airplane application. I'm not sure how I'm going to have my parts dynamically balanced with an extension and prop hub coming off the crank! Dave

At the end of the 20 year FV run, the leading airplanes were turning over 4000 RPM. The racing prop I have here is 48" in diameter…. Wish I had an engine guy around here that would get excited about being on a racing team….A couple of the top FV's had their engines done out California way…Charlie Terry and Rick Leonard built their own engines….

Dave Dave, My guy in Phoenix was willing to balance my crank and prop flange intact. Had they had enough room, they would have ballanced the spinner as well. I'm not sure when my luck will run out...but I have not gotten the cold shoulder as of yet....knock on wood. Chucker

Ed, This guy in Phoenix has 30 years in the performance VW business. He deals with sand rails a great deal. Sand rails generally need power in the same band as us. You may not get him to travel...but I'm sure he will build any engine you need...and he does not care that you want to make it fly. I was told that Brothers VW Machine Shop (in Ontario, CA) does all the machine work for GPASC. I used them for a car engine that I built a few years ago. They were very helpful and the work was excellent. Chucker

Chucker, thanks for the tip…I think one of our FV competitors used Brothers VW…. Of course, the more money you want to spend, the sky is the limit I am sure. I wish I could have been tutored by Charlie Terry before he passed. He did some mighty good engines…. I was hoping to hook up with an engine guy down here in S.C., but I don't know if that person exists….

There is a VW shop here in Winston Salem, NC. Haven't had a chance to get over and talk to them yet and feel them out as far as aviation goes. Might try and give them a call next week to even see if they do any machine work.
By the way, I'm loving all the activity here lately, all good info, been more going on here than S.net, the yahoo SARL group, AND the Tailwind group! Let's keep it up!!!
