So met a guy I bought some metal from who has two VW cases for sale - both with cranks. I was interested but have nothing to put a pulley drive conversion into. I don't think he built either(one might be straight from a car) but both were the universal replacement dual relief cases with bus bosses, case savers, deep studded #3 stud, etc. These are the cases to convert, had better oiling, are likely newer(so less abused), blah, blah. One had rods and one had an older Force One prop hub installed. I have no idea as to the internals or displacements yet but wanted to put it out there. We never talked price so just checking for interest. Dave

If the one is straight from a car, It is possible that it has a cast crank still....Would not use that one. They may cost more to ship than they are worth?......Any Idea what he would take for the one with the hub?...

Boy I don't but I'll be in touch with him. I have read quite a bit about the factory cranks and there is a lot of praise about the VW crank vs a cast import crank. Those are a real risk apparently. I'm not sure I'd be afraid of 4K if it tests okay but that's me. As "VW" Bob Hoover wrote, "...the potential value of a VW engine is $0." I'll drop him a line to see if he's reasonable. There is also a guy at our airport that has a core or two I need to look at. Dave

I should also add that my flywheel drive orientation makes me far less concerned about the front of that crank! Russ wrote back and thought one case had a 69mm crank with the spigots bored for larger cylinders(maybe for an 1835cc IIRC). The other(with the F1 hub) is assumed to have a 69mm crank but he says he will take spigot measurements in the next day or two. I could not see the "front" of the cases due to forms of timing flanges/flywheels mounted but I can only assume the #3 area is okay since they are deep studded there. I had hoped to see stamps of thrust cut. I'll ask if the top of the cases are stamped(I failed to look) as evidence of a previous line bore. Russ has an 1835cc powered KR2 he built in the 70s so has some(all positive) experience with VWs. These cases, I should mention, were picked up with projects or as spares. He said he thought he might get $275 for the pair. That's either not bad at all or, based on Hoover's quote, a waste. These are missing lots of screw in parts BUT considering a new dual relief case is about $800(bare except for case savers) it may be a great deal. I considered picking them up and becoming the "SV engine clearing house guy" but not until I see more people actually following through with building/restoring. Dave

Thanks for the additional info, Dave. Certainly the price is fair if the one block/crank is actually useable... I hear ya on your last sentence. I know where there are two more Sonerai 1 projects available, but I don't bring things up as much because I have been disappointed with tire kickers lately.....I certainly can't 'save them all', but realize that there are more projects out there than interested purchasers......

Ed - the Airrace 1 Formula 1 races have been enjoying a resurgence over the last year or so with plenty of online coverage...seems the timing may be just around the corner for some vw racing. Its not so different.

Matt, Yes...International Formula one and Cassutt airplanes are hot right now..... We need airplanes and crews, and people willing to put some money and work into a project.

Russ wrote back. Both cases are machined for big bore kits and unfortunately he has decided to keep the F1 prop case in reserve just in case. He apologized hoping he hadn't inconvenienced any of us. Oh well. We tried. Dave
