Still fitting stringers so it's unlikely I will cover before fall. That's fine. I have wings to construct and an engine to build. Unexpected/pleasant/unwanted news on the engine. Took my block and crank in to a local VW shop. They didn't care a bit that it was for an aircraft. I knew the case was full-flowed and obviously prepped but besides the obvious clearancing for a stroker crank (though using the stock 69mm crank) the thing was bored for 92s! I had never miked the pistons or spigots until today. I really wanted to stay 1600cc and even had a game plan. Now I guess it'll be an 1835cc and I can use whatever heads I want. Could use 90.5s in the same spigot bores just so I could call it a Liberty engine(1776cc) but might as well take the displacement. So the great news was a confirmed good std/std case and crank! The let down(probably only to me) was the increased bore. If the classes ever get strict I can build a 1600. Dave

I have a machinist in Phoenix who said he could sleeve the cases and heads to take an 1835cc (92mm pistons) back down to 1600 (85.5mm pistons).

Either way , Dave, Supervee has a division you fit in to. Good progress. I would like to Keep Beetlebomb as a 1600….more for historical reasons than anything…..

I do want to stay away from elaborate sleeves, etc. Might need the excuse later to build another engine! I do think that with the thinner walls of the 92s I'll just go with the 90.5s for a 1776. I like to think I won't fall victim to the overheating all the "kids" deal with but why tempt fate? Displacement gains is not my goal! Keep building a little each day! Dave

They also make thick-walled 92's. They are necked down to fit the case but you need to fly cut the heads to 94 mm.

Thanks. I saw a discussion about those. Since I haven't purchased heads yet I could go either way while staying with the 90.5 spigot bores. I did see a pic of the lower necked-down part of the 92mm cylinders and they were quite thin comparatively. Not sure if the warpage could still be a problem if only the neck is smaller or if that's only a problem further out in the cylinder. Dave

They won't be any thinner than every Aerovee or GPAS 2180cc cylinders. Same issue with most 1835cc engines. They run 92mm jugs in 90.5mm cases and have for many moons. The thick-wall 92's just give you more meat above the case....all the way to the 94mm heads. The wall thickness (above the case) is even thicker than the 90.5 jugs.
Your call. They are a bit heavier than the thin-walled 92's and 90.5's.

So after OSH I realized I'll still have about 2 months of really hot wx. My love for dope finishing is fading! I called Consolidated Aircraft Coatings and was told it is okay to switch to the Stits process over my bare Ceconite fabric(same stuff, stamped differently for STC purposes on certified AC) but I had to shrink again to 350 degrees. I ordered some PolyFiber materials and fired up the iron. Well, my lower longeron "covers" were fine at 250 but 350 pulled so tight that I now have the starved horse look(just like a balsa model). Very disappointed as I tend to be a perfectionist but I really don't want to start over right now. I'll always have to excuse it but I do have momentum and a plan. Perfection can come later. I have enough trouble coming with the prop extension harmonics and balancing! I have never finished with Stits so should be fun! All the finishing tapes are on the fuse with the exception of fairing the right horizontal to the fuse(had to order more tape). Still waiting on the spars from Aircraft Spruce (I figured that would take them weeks to months). Have almost all of my engine parts with a few more arriving today. I wonder what challenges I'll have once I start trial fitting everything? Layed out and drilled the panel this weekend. I'll spray wrinkle finish black on it today. In other news: Unfortunately, my good-flying Tripacer is going to be parted out. Has already donated some gauges to the Vee. The 0-320 will be pickled for a later build(not an RV!), Linda's 172 will get the radio, intercom, and transponder. I'll sell what else I can. This goes against everything I believe about mechanical possessions, particularly complete, functioning things - to break something old apart simply for profit - but with only 80 hrs on the engine, newer radio, and a new Garmin transponder I installed, and with it's older covering(despite testing fine), it just won't bring more than the engine itself would cost to replace. Advertised last year and had calls only from lonely people wanting to talk about the Tripacer their father once had. I don't look forward to the job at all - especially all the calls and emails but one less hangar will be nice. Our little airport is again under threat with the city having taken over mgt. in Jan. Lots of supportive talk at city open meetings but no money spent, no work done, and this week a newspaper article now saying " it's unsustainable". Hmmm, they also took over almost $200K that was immediately "borrowed" for another city project "to be replaced when it's needed". It was always city property but our private board was the first to make it profitable but now it isn't? I dislike politicians. I smell warehouses or subdivisions sooner than later. I'll keep at it until they kill me. Might eventually be moving to a surrounding town with an airport. Wish I could hear from more of you guys. We 1%ers with airplanes have to stick together! Seriously, the gift of being in aviation, even slightly, is something many of us dreamed of as kids. To not take advantage of it is quite sad. Dave Kansas City

Dave, I hear ya.......The way airports are going these days. ...... Maybe you can move out to the country and put in your own strip. Your own hangar. Your own rules.... Think about it...... Yes, Kinda sad to part out the piper, but I do understand the $$$value problem.....I had a creampuff Colt that brought $7,500 bucks... Good to hear of the V-Witt progress. I am slowly making progress with #14. I think you may beat me though! Yes, would be nice to hear from more of our members......Have not figured out what puts a fire under people. Those tapes I turned over to you at OSH....Do you think you can edit them a bit and get them on the net?...That seemed to instill some (temporary) interest in Supervee from people we are not hearing from any more........

Blakesburg is this weekend but I'll borrow the recorder ASAP. I'd also like to see some short videos posted about member's projects. I haven't been good about taking walk-around videos as I go but have taken pics. I hope everyone knows there is a lot of help here if they ask questions. They just have to turn the wrench. Dave

Two coats of Poly Brush are sprayed. They recommend four days before spraying color(Poly Tone). Notice I'm skipping Poly Spray for weight savings. I would never recommend such a skip but I'm using one of only three colors thet contain the same amount of UV blocker as the Poly Spray. In the meantime I had to get my Rimco case line bored after all so got that back yesterday. Just $50. Only one over(.020) required. Thrust was still std so not bad. My new crank checked out straight last night so I'll mic all the journals later today. Then fit the rods, check side clearances, and then how much I might have to clearance the case - it's usually the rod cap ends and not the crank throws that hit the case on strokers. Though it feels good, I'll Plastigauge everything too as I want to document every tolerance. Once mocked up, I'll need to figure out who to have balance the parts with the oddball prop extension. That part might just have to be indicated once mounted in it's carrier bearing and then tweaked with a dynamic prop balance. That's a shortcut I'd rather not take but it's unlikely I'll find anyone who can dynamically balance a crank with that extension on it. Just pecking away! Dave

Dave, Thanks for the update...Yes, you are 'pecking away' definitely more accomplishment than most of us can say. Since Oshkosh I have been hit with an unusual amount of work and home related things/responsibilities, and have been having some problems with my legs that are slowing me down, so I have only put a couple hours into #14 since July..... Want to / need to get back on track as soon as I can...Glad Dave's V-Witt is making weekly progress....We need these Supervees finished!!!

Still struggling with the engine build - weird deck height, etc. Im close to having many extra parts for a FV-class engine. I'll have to rebuild one aileron due to a rusted torque tube. .028 is hard to find so will have some complications with that. Got a call my wing material will be delivered soon so need to humidify a work area for that. Been dealing a lot with selling the J3 Kitten and Tripacer hull and all the hassle that involves. Hopefully that will simplify things. Onward and upward! Dave
