I lost this week working on my Sonerai when the Culver misbehaved at KCVC on Monday. There is no better feeling than getting an old bird back to her home field though, repaired and back in the hangar once again. Spent some time with the Sonerai today, hope to get some photos posted and an update once I get these ideas in place!
Keep up the hard work Ed, I'm really looking forward to seeing a couple of Sonerai's flying together! I know you are too!

Joe, Good that you got the Culver back on home turf…And yes, photos of your racer work will be great!!! I have been a tad distracted from Beetlebomb lately as we bought a piece of airport property, where I will be building the 'Super Shop' / hangar….Of course this place will help me have business and hobby all under one roof, so it will be good for the Supervee cause, but as of right now, it is taking airplane re-building time away… I did get the new rudder cables installed, new fair-leads, and am working on the panel, and canopy frame… as I get a few minutes here and there…And the new spar box sheet steel arrived friday…. Yes, we need three airplanes together and flyable, and we can hold a Supervee competition. Getting pictures of such a demonstration or competition , and putting them on the internet, will help us immensely…….ED

Hi Ed, I'm preparing to recover my S1 and have a couple of questions for you:
1) The wood strips that you used to 'clean-up' the lower longeron lines, what size are they and how are did you secure them to the tubing? Are those spruce capstrips? 2) Is the turtle deck at the standard height on Beetle Bomb, or is it raised?
If you have any minor speed mods I should consider to change on the fuselage while the fabric is off, please give your feedback!
Best Regards, Joe

Hi Joe, I bought two eight foot pieces of pine, I believe, corner trim (90 degree angle) from the aircraft wood section of Home Depot. the stuff is used in trim applications and outside corners of walls in houses. It is probably 1" x 1" x 1/8" or so. I feathered the back edge to taper into the longeron. I clamped it at the front, about where the two parallel vertical tube members are, and then let it assume a natural curve to the tail, and clamped it in the rear till the epoxy dried overnight. I glued it onto the lower longerons with T-88 epoxy. there were a couple places where I had to fit in spacers of scrap wood, glued in place. After it was all glued up and sanded, I used 2 coats of urethane varnish on the strips. Spruce cap strip material could be used, and would be lighter, but what I did was quick, available, and cheap….Just a few dollars in material cost. This Sonerai headrest is as per plans, not raised a bit. The rest of my speed mods would require much work and down time, such as the narrowed fuselage…… Glad to hear you are recovering it…You will be happier in the long run!!…Good Luck, ED

Ed, I went to the local 'airplane depot' today and purchased the strips. They were $0.72/ft. Unfortunately I ended up walking out of there with just over $100 worth of other stuff as well... I'll update my project post with some pics as things progress along (blasting/painting/covering, etc) Thanks for the info!

Finially…….I was able to spend a day working on Beetlebomb….Life and 'things' were just mounting up, in a stressful way, so I decided (Val Decided) I should take a whole day off and lock myself up in the shop and work on Beetlebomb….So I did…..Other than several good natured interruptions from the 'airport gang', I was able to still be productive and get the spar box finished, painted , and installed !!…Maybe next weekend I can slide the wings on!!…If I ever figure out how to post pictures, I will get some on here…....Ed
