Well, I hope I can make it go as fast as Charlie did, He was an expert engine builder….and got everything possible out of the little 1600…….I wish I had the experience to do the engine myself, but I have only built one VW in my entire career….I am hoping to have some help ahead of the firewall !!!…Ed

You'll have plenty of help with parts, expertise, and labor when needed, probably too much!

Thanks, Joe…As it is said….one day at a time!! My big job will be to make the fabric and paint work good, to properly reincarnate this machine…..I have the word out in several areas to try to find pictures of the left side of the fuselage….It is on the headrest where Charlie had all the race speeds/ records, etc, painted on, and I want to reproduce that as faithfully as possible…..Ed

Hi Ed, Reminiscing, about the Charlie Terry Days had me get out the book "Racing Planes and air races", 1977-78. The pictures in it of Beetlebomb aren't that great for your graphics request. Albeit, there are left and right profile shots on page 106. This was at the Sturgis, KY race. Perhaps it was later the lettering was added. The only other source I have is the video made the FV race in Palestine, TX, circa 1989 when he was forced down with an overheated motor. I have not watched it for over 25 years. I'll dig it out and remake it to DVD. T. Walker

Hi Tom, and Welcome… Yes, I have that picture, and the Texas Video. The Photos at Sturgis, KY., are at the very beginning of Formula Vee's existence, so there is not much written on the side of the fuselage at that point. Charlie's Race wins and Records all came after that, and were lettered on the left side headrest over the many years thereafter. Glad you found this site, and Welcome you to reminisce here on this forum about your own impressive Formula Vee accomplishments!!…Ed

Have the right wing and aileron all riveted up now, and have started the messy body filler stage over the rivet heads. Am going to fill only the top of wing rivets, to save weight. Fuse is up thru silver, and wet sanded, ready for base coat of white. Still need a good engine, so I can fit up cowls.

Passing me already! Still putting finishing tapes on my fuse. Too many visitors when working out of a hangar. Dave

Hi Ed, As soon as my new engine is completed, I would be happy to loan you my 1835 with mag/2nd elec ignition and carb (if it will help you get things wrapped up there, we need to get these things flying for OSH '17!). I have a GP X-mount and some other parts that could go with it.

Joe, That is a very generous offer. I have an 1834 HAPI engine that a friend in Ohio has agreed to overhaul, but as with everything, timing and distance are the issue. Let me chew on this, I would have to have both engines compatible as far as front hub/prop spacers, as I don't want to have to re fit the cowl/spinner gap later. ...My plan is to spend 90% of my efforts on finishing the airframe, up thru color, and all the graphics, etc. that need to be duplicated, before I worry about a running engine. If I have it at OSH it will likely not have a running engine final fitted. I will be in touch....thanks!
