JoeB....Anything new to report with the new Sonerai?.........Ed Hi Everybody, I know it has been a while but I have been busy! (as we all are I'm sure) Really good to see some new project updates from others here as well. Just a quick update from my side to let you all know I am still actively working on the S1 and checking in here every now and then. I've been doing a lot of reading, research, planning, and placing lots of parts orders for this project. It's coming together, some of the parts will work, some will not (but that is the fun of designing and building!). Got a nice lithium ion battery, compact in size, lightweight, and lots of juice! This should work really nice! Also an external oil cooler (the stock one was probably fine but I want to clean up the top area for a new engine cowling and some other planned mods). Looks like it will work well, most likely to find it's new home inside the motor mount, mounted vertically to the firewall. The oil cooler will be housed in an airbox, fabricated with fresh air supply on the top, discharging out the bottom. Next week the exhaust components should arrive, the plan here being to remove the 4 short stacks and to fabricate a full 4-1 system. The full system should improve performance a bit and will also work better with the wideband 02 sensor. (Ed - Is there any way I could convince you to consider changes to the Supervee rulebook to allow fuel injection? ;D) I'll provide more details in the near future on the fuel system but, long story short, when completed the system will be fully redundant (cu's, fuel pumps, injectors, electronic ignition, and critical sensors). I had plans to add a 3 gallon aux tank under the main but have decided to save that project for a later date. I need to keep the fuel system 'simple' for now until the testing and tuning is completed. Hmm, what else...Did I mention that I came across a great deal on a spare AS21 case? It is already machined for 94s and a Force-1 bearing...oh the potential. All it takes is more time and money! Fuel Injection.......Not at this time.....We need Supervee to walk before it can run. Right now I can't get people to get the most basic of airplane/engines finished and flying. Down the road, If there is one, I am sure rule upgrades will be implemented....Ed

Understood, it's not a deal breaker. I'll just keep the old parts on the shelf rather than eBay! The carb and intake could easily be retrofitted back in a matter of an evening or two when needed.

Hi Ed, Yes, making some progress on the Sonerai between all of the other projects I've got going on! The 4-1 exhaust system is fitted and tacked together with 75% of the welding is completed. Once that is done I will start on the intake manifolds. Hope to have the engine running again before the new year and flying again shortly after!

Joe, Thanks for the update....The 4-1 exhaust system is a big job!....Much insulation is required on the inside of the fiberglass cowls....Ed

I haven't updated this post but have been working quite steadily. Decided to go through the airplane from top to bottom so I've stripped it down to the fuselage. Going to strip, prime, paint, then recover hopefully over the upcoming Christmas break. Come January/February 2014, I should be in the reassembly, testing and tuning phase (fingers crossed). Really need to keep this momentum up to have it ready for the Airventure Cup next year. I reached out for some help on Facebook yesterday and awoke today to a very generous offer from one friend offering help already. That alone was a boost in confidence that this may actually happen!

Ed - quick question about the wood strips along the lower longerons. I am concerned about the 'bowing' effect that the tensioned fabric may cause, how much distance between spacer blocks would you recommend to prevent this from occurring?
And another question - my S1 has metal cabin side panels like yours, I am considering bringing the fabric forward to the spar box to reduce the weight some. Other than access to allow access to the control column, are there any other benefits to the removable metal sides? I just don't want to figure this out (why I should have stayed with removable panels) after I recover!

Joe, Looks Good….On Blueberry I made the side aluminum panels that go from spar box to seat back . I put the 'curve' in the panel bottoms with fluted aluminum angles riveted on, and then riveted the belly pan on. Blueberry did not have the wood strips on the lower longerons. Beetlebomb has the wood strips from the spar box verticals, back to the tail. The gaps where they don't follow the straightness of the longerons are small, and easily supported with little 1/4" and 3/8" or so blocks of wood, epoxied in the gaps. I think I have or 4 per side glued in. The longest unsupported section of wood is maybe 12" to 14"… I see no overwhelming benefit to the metal side panels, and if you are trying to smooth out the ugly lower longeron, the metal panels make it harder to do than if you ran the wood strips all the way.....ED

Great! Thanks Ed. I'll proceed as planned eliminating the side panels Fuselage is completely stripped down now and ready for some minor reworking, rudder pedal relocation, cleaning and painting. Hope to get back on it this weekend

Joe, Don't forget to put a belly stringer down the centerline, that matches somewhat the curve of your wood strips. The belly fabric needs to be supported

I was wondering about that the other day. I need to do a little welding before covering so I went down to the hangar to bring my torches home last night, (unfortunately my daily schedule is interfering with my S1 progress so this way I can burn the midnight oil). Got an A&P IA friend who is going to help me with the fabric and paint. This should help things move along efficiently!

Joe, do you suppose your landing gear is for a Sonerai 2?…There seems to be more flat area outboard of the longerons, before the tangent point of the gear bend….I will measure mine and let you know what the flat width under the longerons is…..ED

The previous owner installed 5/8" gear after a taxi incident with the 1/2" gear. I think it says S1 on it, but anyone could have written that with a Sharpie. I'm out of town right now but will take a look when I'm back home.
