The 'new' S1 should be on the truck heading home to Georgia in the next week or so. I'll update on condition when it arrives and I get a chance to give it a good look over. Hopefully it won't take too much to get it airworthy (and then I can start working on all of the speed mods to catch up to Jeff)! -Joe Attachments:

The trip home will be easy, I've hired a shipper with enclosed trailer. So now I search the Sonerai forums while I wait! Hangar is at Brookbridge Aerodrome (8GA9), just south of Atlanta.

Eric White mentioned that you are planning to run it in the av cup? Let's chat! I'm really excited to see the race is back on as I have been thinking about joining for several years. It may be a bit ambitious to make it this year, but then again it may be possible if no major repairs are needed and it's run as the 'ugly duckling'. I am attempting to create a team with my flying friends to get this airplane airworthy in time, hopefully they share my enthusiasm and join in. I'd really like to participate this year just to learn the basics and get a chance to see/discuss the modifications you've done to your beautiful S1 in person. Hopefully, with the help of Ed and you, I can offer some sort of real competition in the next year or two!

Ask anything? What do you think about stepping up to a 2332 in the S1? Will a Force 1 prop hub go on any crankshaft? What machining is required (to the crank, not the case)? How about cyl head selection and valve size? Cam? I could go on and on... (If you couldn't tell, I just spent the last hour or so on theSamba.com, Aircooled.net, and Sonerai.net dreaming about big power!)

A 2332 sounds like fun! However, it does start the snowball effect. You will have to feed that beast. If you have the stock tank, it will give you about an hour at full throttle. If the plane is dirty, you are not going to go all that fast. A typical AVC leg is about 190nm. You can make more than one fuel stop, but that would be a pain, so put adding a couple of fuel tanks somewhere.
You can add the F1 hub to any crank, but normal cranks still have the key way, which is where most crank breaks start. Steve's crank is only 82mm giving you a 2276 with 94mm jugs. The crank needs to be machined for the taper In that senerio, I personally would go with the stronger crank setup over displacement. Or, build a rear drive of your own. Doable, but if you have a job don't plan on flying it this year ; )
For heads, it's hard to beat the CB 044 heads for price and reliability. Traditional theory says that you want a short duration cam.
Given the available time, I would spend you time getting it flying with the engine that is in it. Work out the bugs and clean up the airframe where possible. Put another tank or two in it. Then go fly the snot out of it. Run it wide open for a few hours and see if it stays cool and stays together. You are going to want to be as comfortable as possible in it for the race.

Good advice from Jeff. The aerodynamic tasks might take all year to iron out. I would recommend one clean up project at a time. Also, the tires on your bird do not look like 500 x 5's, but look rather squarish in frontal cross section....Those squarish edges could potentially be a handling problem issue on the ground. They tend to grab and tuck at the slightest side load..... There's tons of things to look at, but if it were me, I would first make sure that your gear has attach wedges on the lower longeron. Basically a must for good ground handling. I would even suggest mounting the gear on backwards......The gear mounting, and it's clean up, followed by a good set of pants, can be worth 8 to 10 mph alone........Ed

All good advice! Most important to me, I would rather keep flying rather than be stuck on the ground. I have no intentions of changing the engine out for some time, it's a 50hr GP1835 that seems to run really well so I will go with this for a while to get familiar and test the plane out. First on the list is cleaning up the panel, fixing a few things, and a full inspection of the airplane. Good catch on the tires Ed, you have sharp eyes. Thank you for recognizing these details. I do have a complete set of 500.5 wheels/tires/brakes for a future conversion on the Culver Cadet (but it really doesn't need it, the expanders are working fine). Maybe those tires will be fitted on the Sonerai to replace the 'square' tires. I did read your article about the gear wedge and turning the gear around 'backwards' the other day. This will be on the list. Thanks for sharing that as well. Jeff - Any chance you still have any panel blanks left? Keep the suggestions coming, I'll update with plenty as soon as the airplane gets here (probably this Saturday) -Joe

I have one panel left. Its a replica of mine if you want to see the layout. Water jet cut with screw holes. $15 plus shipping.
I love the layout. It puts the important flight instruments in sight as you are looking to the left over the wing to land.
